The largest wind tunnel of the German-Dutch Wind Tunnels Foundation (DNW) and the largest in Europe is located in Marknesse. It is a low-speed wind tunnel where speeds up to a maximum of 550 kilometers per hour can be tested. The tunnel is therefore called the ‘Large-Low speed Facility’ (LLF).

Passenger cars, commercial vans, and trucks
The dimensions of the wind tunnel also make it perfectly suitable for aerodynamic and aero-acoustic research on passenger cars, commercial vans, and trucks. For trucks, the LLF is the only tunnel in Europe where this is possible, and it has been done here for many years. It goes without saying that lower vehicle resistance translates directly into lower fuel consumption. This is beneficial for the consumer but, above all, less harmful to the environment. With stricter emission standards, more accurate measurement of vehicle resistance is of great importance to the automotive industry. A road simulation system is currently under development at the LLF to determine the resistance of larger vehicles even more accurately than is currently possible. This system will be operational in 2022 and will represent a unique facility for the industry.

With the arrival of the RDW test center and the further development into a multimodal test center (MITC), together with current and future partners, unique opportunities are arising.
